The global port performance rankings have been released: Seven Chinese ports have made it into the top ten.

According to the fifth edition report of the Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) jointly released by the World Bank and S&P Global, the overall efficiency of global container ports declined from 2020 to 2024 due to the Red Sea crisis, restrictions on the Panama Canal, and the ongoing impacts of the pandemic. However, performance varied significantly across different regions. Specifically, East Asian ports saw the most notable improvements in performance, leading the global rankings for 2024; South Asian ports achieved rapid recovery, ranking high in efficiency improvements; North American and European ports showed resilience, with scores remaining largely unchanged from 2023.The report particularly points out that improvements in port efficiency are not exclusive to high-income countries. Ports in developing countries, such as Dakar in Senegal, Jawaharlal Nehru Port in India, Mersin in Turkey, Port Said in Egypt, and Posorja in Ecuador, have significantly improved their rankings between 2020 and 2024 by optimizing operational models, adopting digital technologies, and strengthening supply chain collaboration."Even amidst multiple shocks, ports in developing countries are looking for ways to adapt, improve, and maximize value," emphasized Nicolas Peltier-Thiberge, World Bank Director of Global Transport Affairs. "This reminds us that."

It is worth mentioning that among the top ten global port efficiencies in 2024, Chinese ports occupy seven seats, with Yangshan Port continuing to hold the top spot, Fuzhou Port jumping to second, Dalian Port ranked fourth, Mawan Port sixth, Guangzhou Port eighth, Chiwan Port ninth, and Ningbo Zhoushan Port tenth. These ports mainly benefit from their continuously improving automation terminal coverage; intelligent operations that reduce ship waiting times using AI scheduling systems and IoT devices, as well as the advantages brought by data interoperability among customs and logistics companies leading to port collaboration.Turloch Mooney, head of S&P Global Market Intelligence, added that "as we navigate the increasingly complex global shipping environment, understanding and enhancing port performance is crucial for economic growth and competitiveness." Ports, as core nodes in the supply chain, require efficiency optimization that integrates data sharing and process re-engineering throughout the entire chain. It is understood that this issue of the CPPI covers 403 ports worldwide, based on over 175,000 vessel docking data and 247 million container operations, utilizing "total time ships spend in port" as the core assessment indicator. This methodology highlights the direct impact of port operational efficiency, dock scheduling capability, and port collaboration levels on the stability of the global supply chain.
